Congratulations to the first group of Laboratory Technician Graduates

Wednesday, 25 November 2020

BioPharmaChem Ireland (BCPI), the Ibec group that represents the BioPharma and Chemical sectors in Ireland, are delighted to congratulate the class of 2020, who today graduated from the Level 6, Laboratory Technician program at a virtual ceremony with Technological University Dublin, Tallaght. This is the very first graduation for this program and it is a fantastic opportunity to recognise and applaud their exceptional achievement.

Matt Moran, Director of BioPharmaChem Ireland said: “I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the successful graduates today - I hope that they have a long and fulfilling career in the sector. BPCI is delighted to be able to support this important initiative. As the industry continues to grow, so does the need to attract talent, this alternative route into the industry can only benefit potential graduates and biopharma companies alike."

The Laboratory Apprenticeship program was developed and launched in 2018 in TU Dublin, Tallaght in conjunction with BioPharmaChem Ireland and industry. These apprenticeships are driven by industry and have been tailored to address identified skills gaps, creating a new route for a career as a Lab Technician or Lab Analyst in the life science sector. The program expanded to Waterford Institute of Technology in 2019.

These programmes offer unrivalled opportunities for candidates to obtain a Level 6 or Level 7 qualification, while gaining practical, hands-on work experience in some of the best labs in the country. The blended learning approach allows the apprentice to work 3 days in industry and attend college the other 2 days.

The graduating apprentices are sponsored by the following employers: Alexion Pharmaceuticals, APC Ltd, Helsinn Birex Pharmaceuticals, Merck Group, Pfizer, SK Biotek Ireland Ltd and Takeda Ireland. Many of them have progressed into the Level 7 apprenticeship programme, which will allow them to train further as a Lab Analyst.

John Behan, Head of Science Department TU Dublin added I wish to congratulate our first cohort of graduates from the Laboratory Apprenticeship Technician Level 6 Program. TU Dublin is delighted to act as the lead academic provider for this innovative program. We see the apprenticeship programs as providing a very valuable additional pipeline of talent for this rapidly expanding sector.”

These programmes also have endless benefits for employers in terms of creating new talent pipelines. Feedback from participating employers to date has been outstanding. Across the full 3 years, the employer is “building a career with the apprentice”.

As demand from potential candidates grows nationally, we look forward to the next intake of apprentices in 2021, with hiring companies to be announced early in the year. If you are a company or candidate interested in learning more, please send us an email at

Congratulations again to each of the graduating apprentices and best of luck on your future journey!
