Laboratory Apprenticeship wins at Pharma Industry Awards

Thursday, 3 December 2020

BioPharmaChem Ireland BPCI the Ibec group that represents the BioPharma and Chemical sectors in Ireland, and Technological University Dublin, Tallaght are delighted to win the Pharma Education and Training Award for 2020, This is a huge honour that speaks volumes to the effort put in by the education providers, the apprentices, the mentors and of course the participating employers.

Andrew Hayes, Chair of the Laboratory Apprenticeship Steering Group said “The creation and successful launch of the BPCI National Laboratory Apprenticeships was a passion project for many pioneers within the Biopharmaceutical sector. We believed that these Apprenticeships would engage and develop a parallel source of untapped talent into the ever-growing sector, giving a chance to those with different learning needs, while complementing the ongoing recruitment of those with the necessary traditional third-level qualifications, all to ensure the ongoing supply of much needed skills to the industry.

The experience of participating companies has been overwhelmingly positive, and it gave great satisfaction to us to see the inaugural class graduate in November, with a further 55 Apprentices currently engaged nationally in the programmes. This award is a fitting recognition to all who been involved in the accomplishments to date.”

Launched in 2018, the Laboratory Apprenticeship is still a relatively new program, so to win this award and such a prestigious category is a fantastic boost for the program.

Sarah Howard, Sanofi said of the program “With industry developed content that is QQI accredited, the lab apprenticeship is a fantastic way to build a robust talent pipeline with skills that are always in demand, regardless of the industry you are working in. Sanofi now has seven Lab apprentices spread across three of our labs in Waterford, with plans to recruit further apprentices next year.”

Now in its third year, the program has seen fantastic success. The apprentices are currently employed with some outstanding sponsor companies, and the next apprentice intake is due to happen in the new year. We look forward to welcoming more new apprentices and sponsor companies in 2021. For more information on the Laboratory Apprenticeship program, please email
